What is Medicare

Medicare is a national health insurance program in the United States that provides coverage to people who are 65 years of age or older, as well as to certain younger people with disabilities. It is run by the federal government and is funded through a combination of taxes and premiums paid by beneficiaries. Medicare is the federal health insurance program that covers people who are 65 or older. It also covers younger people with certain disabilities. Some Medicare plans cover people with ESRDs (End-Stage Renal Diseases).

Medicare Basics

Medicare is federal health insurance primarily for people age 65 and older. Some younger people qualify because of certain disabilities or medical conditions.

  • Part A — Hospital insurance: Helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care.
  • Part B — Medical insurance: Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical supplies.
  • Part C — Medicare Advantage: A Medicare-approved private plan that provides your Part A and Part B benefits. Most plans also include Part D.
  • Part D — Prescription drug coverage: Helps cover prescription medications through a Medicare-approved private plan.

Choose Your Medicare Coverage Path

Path 1: Original Medicare

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. You can generally see any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare, anywhere in the U.S.

You may add a separate Part D plan for prescription drugs and a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to help pay certain deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Both are optional additions; Medigap is not required to keep Original Medicare.

Path 2: Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage, also called Part C, is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits. Most plans include Part D, and some offer dental, vision, or hearing benefits.

Provider networks, benefits, and costs vary by plan. Plans have an annual limit on your costs for covered Medicare medical services. You must have Parts A and B to enroll and continue paying your Part B premium, plus any plan premium.

Important: Medigap works with Original Medicare—not Medicare Advantage.

Prescription Drug Coverage — Part D

If you choose Original Medicare, you can add a separate Part D plan. Most Medicare Advantage plans already include prescription drug coverage.

Compare your medications, participating pharmacies, premiums, and prescription costs before choosing a plan. If you have other drug coverage, check how it works with Medicare before making changes.

Medicare Supplement Plans — Medigap

Medigap helps pay certain out-of-pocket costs left by Original Medicare. The policy you choose determines which benefits are covered.

New Medigap policies do not include prescription drug coverage. You can add a separate Part D plan for medications. Medigap generally does not cover routine dental or vision care, hearing aids, or long-term custodial care.

Compare the 10 Standardized Medigap Plans

Use the chart below to compare benefits—not premiums. Plans with the same letter have the same standardized benefits, but premiums can vary by insurance company. Local standardization rules may differ, and not every plan is available in every location.
